Countdown to Munich’s Oktoberfest

Munich’s biggest festival of the year kicks off on September 17th with the tapping of the first keg by the Mayor of Munich at the historic Schottenhamel tent. Historically, the festival did take place during the month of October, but as it grew in popularity and its dates were prolonged, it was moved up to September in order to take advantage of the warmer September nights. Although the festival offers live music, an amusement park and parades, the main draw must be the elaborately built beer tents. Ranging from the world famous Hofbräu-Tent to the celebrity magnet Hippodrom-Tent to the Armbrustschützen-Tent, where the Oktoberfest crossbow competition is held, each tent offers up a unique festival experience. Oktoberfest continues through October 3rd.
