Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens

Part pleasure garden, part amusement park, Tivoli opened in 1843 and remains Copenhagen’s top tourist attraction. Although the amusement park rides, carnival games, open-air cafes, restaurants and beer gardens draw the most attention, the park is actually about 75% open space. During the day the colorful displays of flowers welcome visitors to the park while after sunset the majestic lights of the grounds tend to in the crowds. Careful attention to the themes of rides and games will reveal facets of Danish history.

Tribute is paid to Hans Christian Andersen, the popular author (and friend of the park’s founder), whose fairy tales are featured in the ride The Flying Trunk and whose iconic top hot was the inspiration for the game H.C. Andersen’s Hat.
