Moscow: St. Basil’s Cathedral on Red Square

Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, St. Basil’s consists of nine chapels built on a single foundation. The most impressive and recognizable feature of the cathedral is its brightly colored domes. Its irregular shape and iconic colors create an effect that makes the cathedral seem as if it were popping out of the pages of a storybook. However, the urban legends that tell the story of the cathedral are anything but fairy tales. Although nothing more than a good story, it has been said that Ivan had the architects behind the building blinded upon its completion so that they could never build something that would rival the majesty of St. Basil’s. If you are visiting Red Square, the brightly colored spires will draw you towards the cathedral if the crowd of tourists converging on the site doesn’t get you there first.
